Avalon Elementary School April 2006 Newsletter
April 5, 2006
Dear Parents,
Our students will be taking the State mandated test AIMS next week April 10 – April 14 with make-ups the following week (April 17 – April 21). It is imperative that each child attend school each of the testing days. Make sure each child has enough sleep and is ready to do his best. These scores, in addition to their school work, will determine whether or not the student will be passed to the next grade.
Avalon Elementary will be having a Benefit Dinner and Auction Fund Raiser on April 22 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM. There will be an authentic Mexican Enchilada Dinner with many exciting items to be auctioned off. Tickets are on sale for the dinner in the office or can be bought from each teacher for $25.00 per couple and $15.00 per single.
Currently at Avalon Elementary School we are having Early Registration for the next school year. Please register for next year as soon as possible so you can secure your place – space is very limited! We will be having a Kindergarten and School-wide registration nights on April 12th and April 26th from 3:00PM-6:00PM. If you have any questions, please contact Kelli at (480) 671-4584.
We will be taking Kindergarten through Eighth grade Promotion Picture on April 18th. The brochures will be going home the week of April 10th.
REMINDER, WE HAVE EARLY RELEASE ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26TH.
Sincerely,
Mat Reese

It is www.familywatchdog.us When you visit this site, you can enter your address and a map will pop up with your house as the small icon of a house And red, blue, green dots surrounding your entire neighborhood. When you click on these dots, a picture of a person will appear with an address and the description of the crime he or she had committed. The vest thing is that you can show your children pictures and see how close these people live to your home or school. This site was developed by John Walsh from America's Most Wanted. AVALON INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
ADVISE ON HOW TO LISTEN TO YOUR CHILD
Take a break and listen to your child
Specific actions, like making eye contact, kneeling down to your child's level and tilting your head, show your child that you are listening. They also help you really listen. If you can't talk at that moment, you might say, "Let's talk in a few minutes; I'm in the middle of something".Repeat what you heard
It's often use to restate what you heard and put your child's feelings into words. You might say, "You wanted a turn on the swing right now, didn't you?" or "You seem sad about going to daycare today." These reflective statements acknowledge and give words to your child's feelings. However, do this carefully. If a child is in the middle of a tantrum, saying, "You're really mad and out of control!" may aggravate the situation rather than help it.Ask specific questions to gather more information
You might say, "Can you tell me exactly what happened?" If it makes Sense to talk some more, you might ask, "What upset you the most?" Follow-up questions both acknowledge your child's feelings and get your child taking about them. And they help you better understand what happened and how your child is thinking about it.
