Principal's Message

This year Avalon achieved a Performance
Plus rating and we met our AYP. That’s a tribute to the
dedicated teachers we have here at Avalon. The feeling at
Avalon is one of a small school. The small class sizes will
allow the teachers an opportunity to impact the learning of our
students. This year we are "raising the bar". Our reading
program has already seen fantastic reading success; we will
continue that success while raising our expectations in math and
writing. This year we'll be working hard to get EVERYONE
involved. Best of all we added MUSIC to our curriculum, which I
feel will add tremendously to our students’ success! I'll be
looking at innovative ways to open communication between
teachers and parents. I'm a firm believer that when our
students see that their teacher and parents are actively
interested in their education they will be excited about their
achievements at school. Drop in and say "hi!".
I'm looking forward to a great year at Avalon!

Back to Basics:
Over time schools in America have changed philosophies to encompass a changing world. In doing so schools have gotten away from the basic foundations that made schools in America great. At Avalon we want to get back to the basics in education. That does not mean turning our backs to modern technology and proven teaching models. It means we are dedicated to small classrooms, quality reading, writing, and math programs and a structured music curriculum.
Technology:
With a state of the art computer lab we enhance our students learning to meet a growing need for the understanding of computers, keyboarding and other life skills. Students are taught the use of computer programs such as Power Point and Word. The use of technology is integrated throughout the curriculum both in the lab and individual classrooms. Technology is no longer a luxury, it is a life skill
Small Classroom Sizes

A low teacher to student ratio. Our average teacher to student ratio is 20:1 Avalon’s Highly Qualified teachers are dedicated to teaching the basics that help a student become well-rounded and prepared for skills that are important to their future.
Reading, Writing and Math

Our curriculum is built upon strong reading, writing and math programs. As a leading school in the Apache Junction area in Reading First, Avalon understands the importance of helping a child be successful through teaching them how to read. Students receive daily instruction and intervention when needed to attain Arizona State Standards at their grade level in reading.
High expectations in writing is expected and practiced at Avalon. Teachers are trained in the use of the Spalding Method for writing. Spalding raises student reading and spelling scores, while giving them a firm foundation in handwriting. Six trait writing is a program based upon the writing standards used to grade the states AIMS tests each school year. As the students understand the use of rubrics and writing traits they plan for success in writing.
Math curriculum is built at a fundamental level through the use of manipulatives. Students not only know their math facts, but understand why they are so. Through the use of manipulative children see and visualize math facts. This helps them store knowledge in both their short and long term memories.
